Yesterday, someone commented asking me to talk about how I stopped binge eating, because yes, I used to!
Do I anymore? No. Do I sometimes overeat? Yes.
There’s a difference. To me, bingeing was this:
Dieting, eating really good all day, eating one small morsal of something bad, and then going to the cupboards and eating everything that I considered bad. I mean, not one bowl of ice cream, but five. Anyone experience this?
Well, heres so how I solved the problem:
I stopped dieting, and I started eating whatever I wanted to eat.
You might be thinking “what? But that’s the worst thing I could do! If I allowed myself what I wanted to eat, I’d eat everything bad! I’d be out of control, fat, and miserable!”
Okay, I understand you might feel this way, but no you won’t. If you want to conquer compulsive eating, I first recommend that you buy the book “Why Weight,” by Geneen Roth. I use this book with myself, and a couple of my clients, and it’s wonderful!
If you’re reading this book, page 84 talks about how “food is only food.”
Here is how Geneen Roth puts it:
“When we realize that we can have the foods we want, the need and desire to have them all the time disappear. If we can have them whenever we’re hungry for them, they lose their power and become ordinary.
Exercise: Buy one food that you want and have not allowed yourself to eat.
After you finish eating it, answer the following questions:
1) Once I bought the food and ate it without guilt, did I still want it as much as I thought I had?
YES OR NO?
2) If I felt like I could eat this food as much as I wanted it – as much, say, as I feel like I can eat carrots or lettuce – would my desire for this food change?
YES OR NO?
We only give ourselves permission not to eat when we give ourselves permission to eat. We can only tell the difference between foods that we want and foods that we think we want when we give ourselves permission to eat all foods.”
So, there you have it. Geneen Roth’s point of view. And of course, there is more to it, and she goes into detail. But, I wanted to use her point of view because it’s my exactly point of view on eating, and she put it fabulously. She goes on to do exercises regarding “What do I really want?” “Calories don’t count” and “Restaurant Eating, Social Eating,” etc…
In the exercise above, my answer went like this:
Buy one food that you want and have not allowed yourself:
I bought frozen yogurt filled to the brim with half peanut butter, and half pecan praline flavors. I topped it off with organic granola (I’ve been craving granola), yogurt chips, coconut, and reeses peanut butter cups. I washed that down with two homemade chocolate chip cookies, all while watching The Bachelor with my cousins.
1) Once I bought the food and ate it without guilt, did I still want it as much as I thought I had?
NO. I felt sick afterwards, and became thankful that I could wake up and eat something healthy for breakfast.
2) If I felt like I could eat this food as much as I wanted it – as much, say, as I feel like I can eat carrots or lettuce – would my desire for this food change?
Oh gosh, If I knew I had the opportunity to eat that same thing every night, I would lose my appetite. Feeling sick off sugar like that just does not sound appealing. Now I know that I can just have a little bit when I crave it, and I don’t need to think about it all the time. It’s there whenever I want it.
SO. That being said, here’s how I have listened to my cravings so far today, using the chart below:

First, I woke up at 6:30
Using chart:
Hungry? No
Do I have a picture of what I want to eat? Yes
Can I smell or taste what I want to eat? Yes
Do I want something spicy, sweet, bland, cold, hot, room temp, smooth, crunchy, other? Hot and smooth
What will I eat? Coffee with soy creamer

6:45am
Hungry? Yes
Do I have a picture of what I want to eat? Yes
Can I smell or taste what I want to eat? Yes
Do I want something spicy, sweet, bland, cold, hot, room temp, smooth, crunchy, other? Sweet, hot, crunchy
What will I eat? Energy bagel bar toasted with butter

I was satisfied with a little bit left, and I stuck it in the fridge. About an hour later, I grabbed the little piece out of the fridge, ate it, and headed off to Step Class

After Step, I was starving! I knew what I wanted, but I didn’t have everything to make it, so I crossed the street to Trader Joe’s and bought some yogurt and my favorite granola.

Hungry? Yes
Do I have a picture of what I want to eat? Yes
Can I smell or taste what I want to eat? Yes
Do I want something spicy, sweet, bland, cold, hot, room temp, smooth, crunchy, other? Sweet, cold, crunchy
What will I eat? Mango yogurt with organic blueberries, a little bit of chia seeds, cranberry maple granola, and walnut pieces (I didn’t use the agave because I remembered that the mango yogurt is already plenty sweet – I use agave on plain yogurt, which is what I usually have. Mango sounded great today!)

So, there! I made it, and I was in heaven. Now, I don’t have to think of food at all. The next time I am hungry, I just ask myself these questions, and go from there:
Hungry?
Do I have a picture of what I want to eat?
Can I smell or taste what I want to eat?
Do I want something spicy, sweet, bland, cold, hot, room temp, smooth, crunchy, other?
What will I eat?

Have a very blessed day, and listen to your body!

That chart is awesome, could you please email me a copy?
And also what’s the next step if you aren’t hungry but you do have a picture of what you want? Is this the time to say no to eating then? Thanks:-)
Hi Naomi, yes. I would definitely say wait until you’re hungry. BUT, hungry is based on a 0-10 scale. 10 is stuffed, 5 is comfortable, and 0 is very hungry. Anything between 0-4 is hunger
Sometimes you can feel hunger in your throat, and sometimes in your stomach (growling, burning).
I actually just too a photo of the chart to show an example on the blog. The chart is in Geneen Roths book. I posted a link to buy it on Amazon if you click on the title
Wauw! This post is so helpful!! For years I have been stuck in a binge -purge and the starve myself circle.. It it not until recently I decided and realized that if I ever wanted to beat my ED I needed help. I am in a much healthier and better place today compared to just two months ago, but it is so hard. Everyday is a battle but I know I just have to keep going and eventually I will be where you are.. This post really inspired me and helped me and I am definitely going to buy that book! Sounds like it could help me.. So thank you so much, Paige!
Heidi! You are welcome! Diets lead to binges, kick the diets! Also, give up the scale. The scale is such a trap! I gave mine up for good. You’re welcome. Definitely buy the book! It’s been so helpful for me.
You’re so right about the scale! In fact I am going to throw it out today so I won’t be tempted by it
It really doesnt do me any good…
Oh good heidi! The only thing that should determine your worth is knowing that you were made beautifully.
My solution for over eating, which is what I very typically tend to do is to ONLY eat things on a plate. No taking a “bite” of this or that out of the pantry, or eat a random yogurt. Eat it all on a plate. Helps me!
I went from having severe anorexia to binge eating like crazy… luckily I never got overweight, but I still struggle everyday. I’ve tried so many self help books, but nothing helps my DAILY inner struggle. Your blig makes so much sense. Thank you for your honesty Paige.
Oh and coffee, oatmeal and frozen yogurt are my favorites too! ♡
Hi Amber, I can imagine how hard that is for you. I am glad that my blog made sense to you. It is daily that we have to listen to our bodies, and daily that we should do things for ourselves. I will be posting about that also. Coming soon
Love this post so much!! I have been recovering from binge eating and it is definitely one of the hardest yet most rewarding things I have had to overcome. Geneen Roth is an amazing resource, I just finished “Women, Food and God” but am interested in reading “Why Weight” Thank you so much for being brave, sharing your story and being an amazing role model for young women. You are such a light!
Mary @ Mary Had a Little Blog recently posted..G-Free Oatmeal Chocolatey Chipy Cookies
How did you like women, food, and God? I would love to read that book. Definitely suggest reading Why Weight. Just do a little bit each day, and before you know it you’ll be halfway through. I love this book. It gives me a DAILY boost. Thank you for your sweet compliments, they are so nice to hear
Thank you so much for this post! Your advice is so encouraging and it’s good to know that I’m not the only one who has struggled with the being too restrictive/binge cycle. You are such an inspiration, Paige, and I really believe that someday I can quit binging for good, but it’s long road.
Shelby, I am so glad this post encouraged you. You’re not the only one. I’ve had many nights of “I’m just going to eat everything in site!” Glad to see those days put behind me. You will be able to stop, once you start allowing yourself the things that you’re tempted to binge on. Once you allow yourself those things, they lose their power over you.
Thank you soooo much for this post. I go through the exact same thing you used to with binge eating and thought there was nothing I could do about it. I am now motivated to listen to my body and follow the advice you have given to try and overcome this eventually.
Dharshi, I wish you the best of luck…! I know how hard it is! Please, do yourself one favor and listen to your body.
Thank you so much for posting this, love. I really needed to read it. <3

Awe Cai, I am so glad you read it
Hi Paige,
I’m having EXTREME trouble with binging at LATE night now…worse is that I have a low iron and a lot of fatigue and kinda low weight, so I don’t really exercise (other than useless walking)….the problem is that I’m highly constipated…what can I have for breakfast when NOT hungry the morning after the binge?? Its horrible feeling….I feel I need “something” to get moving

And smoothie suggestions for such?
I’m SO lost with food…I feel like I need a true cleanse in order to get over this but without exercise I feel so horribly…its midnight now and another guilt fest here
Emotional totally…I just bought the book “Brain over binge’ and HOPE it will help….the constipation and the stitches in guts worse…
and protein powder recs? I am considering cutting out dairy for a bit (?). Email me PLEASE
Hi, I don’t have any professional recommendations, but friend to friend I would say read the book “Why Weight.” As for smoothie suggestions, I love green smoothies with spinach or kale in them. I always use banana and unsweetened vanilla almond milk for good flavor too
The biggest thing for me with being healthy, its having the mindset of eating mainly whole foods. Trying to stay away from the processed things as much as possible. If you’re going t have dessert, have fruit. Put it on a plate, make it look appetizing, sit down, and enjoy it. Of course, you’re going to eat a few processed things here and there, but the MAIN part of your diet should be home made, home cooked foods. I use aria protein powder, just because I really like the flavor. I’m sure there are better proteins out there. Do exercise that you enjoy. For example, I do Step Aerobics, Yoga, and taking long walks outside. Walking is really good for you!
